Katie Brookes solo exhibition at Chopping Block in Peckham

Katie Brookes (Drawing Year 2013) has a solo exhibition at new art space The Chopping Block in Peckham.

KATIE BROOKES: First Date for Three Years
28th April - 6th May
Private View Thursday 28th April

The Chopping Block is proud to be presenting its first solo show, First Date for Three Years, featuring the new works of talented artist, Katie Brookes.
In an exhibition exclusively showcasing Brookes’ most recent paintings, First Date for Three Years serves as an insight into the artist’s ongoing endeavours to explore and interpret the varied conditions of human experience.
Brookes’ paintings are carnal unfoldings; visceral, subversive and absurd. Instinctual forms and colours exist somewhere between suggestion and evidence, revealing to us perturbed scenes that flaunt the subtle ways in which narratives are formed. Whilst at times grotesque and primal, these are stories whose characters, and motivations lie hidden. They are untrue realities – peculiar to themselves – liberated by symbols, signs and a constant flux between surreal humour and the real – in which deeper meanings are inevitably conveyed.
The new gallery's ambition is to provide an alternative platform for creative, artistic talent – both well known and obscure – across multiple spheres. Through a considered selection of programmed events, printed ephemera and a digital presence, we aim to create a critical engagement that revolves around a monthly curated topic – culminating in an exhibition at the end of each month.
Address: The Chopping Block, 22a Blenheim Grove, Peckham London, SE15 4QN

Charlie Tepasse: Sense Charity commission

Lauren by Charlie Tepasse

Colin Anderson (of Sense Charity for deafblind people) has commissioned Alumnus Charlie Tepasse (Drawing Year 2015) to make a series of drawings of the people the charity supports. Starting in mid-April 2016, Charlie will be spending time with individuals who have a combination of sight and hearing problems, with the aim of making a series of portraits. Issues of identity, self-expression, and the nature of being human are topics that are frequently implicit in the work of the charity and, in embarking on this project, the artist hopes to convey the emotional and psychological aspects of the challenges these people face. In the past, Sense have commissioned writers and photographers, however this is the first time they have commissioned a draughtsman. Colin says: ‘I have always thought that drawings of the individuals and families we support might be able to convey more powerfully the essential human drama that our work so often involves.

Press Release
Mercer Chance is proud to present an exhibition of paintings and drawings by 12 emerging contemporary artists.
Truly a feast for the eyes, this exhibition gives us a glimpse into a group of young artists who are exploring a wide array of approaches to figurative image-making. Since they came together as post-graduate students at The Royal Drawing School in 2012, they have been pushing their practices independently, each searching for the means to genuinely express their own interests, attitudes and sensitivities.
We are struck by a collision of personalities; vibrant colour, gutsy painting, intense observation, freewheeling imagination, dreamy landscapes, quiet moments of delicacy, dense figuration and patterning. And yet, there are continuities between the pieces and intriguing comparisons to be made. Like a fruit salad, somehow it all comes together; the sweet with the sharp, the subtle and the bold, and we are left enlivened, provoked even.
